Flaxseed gel. You’ve heard about it, you’ve read some great reviews, but what actually is it? Let me take you on a journey, young child, a journey through mountains of grossness that leads to beautiful curls…

Gross

Wtf is flaxseed gel?

The gel of flaxseed…

It’s full of Omega 3, which is great for your hair in terms of moisture, protection, and even length! The gel promises to define your curls, without leaving any flakes, and while still keeping your hair silky soft… but we will put that to the test in my review!

You can buy it for a decent price in most places online, but you can make it yourself for much cheaper!!! I will warn you, however, this DIY is not the easiest - it took me a lot of trial and error (and here I am to tell you what worked to save you the trouble), it is gross af, and it takes quite a while. So if you can deal with that for money saving purposes (which I certainly can), then you also get the right to brag that you made your own product! Win win!

This method made about 200ml of gel for me, which could cost around £5 if store bought!

Also, please note that this gel doesn’t last forever. If you keep it in the fridge it should last around two weeks before it starts to reek! And trust, me it really does reek!

You will need…

40g (or ¼ cup) of flaxseed - this must be whole, not ground! I got 500g on Amazon for £6, which will make about 12 tubs of gel!

800ml boiling water

A medium sized pan

A container to keep your gel in - ones with wide openings will work better

A spoon

Organza bags - this is for separating your gel from your seeds. Most recipes I found use tights, however I found that mine kept ripping. I had some organza bags in the back of a cupboard and they worked great, not perfectly, but great!

A jug

Method

1. Boil the flaxseed with the water for around 15 minutes. The consistency should be kinda snotty and gloopy

2. Leave off the heat for 15 minutes to let the gel cool so you can touch it easier

3. Spoon some of the gel into your organza bag - not too much as the bags can be quite weak and you don’t want to break it!

4. Squeeze the gel out over your jug. Don’t worry if some seeds get into the gel - they’re easy enough to spoon out with a metal spoon. Keep doing this until you think you have all the gel out

5. Pour your gel from the jug into your container! Voila!

The Revie

CG Approved: Yes

Price: Around £6 for 12 tubs worth of flaxseed

UK Availability: I bought this on Amazon, but struggled to find it in supermarkets. Most places stock ground flaxseed, which won't work

Smell: No smell, until it goes ff, when it absolutely HONKS

Texture: Very very thick and very very sticky

Definition: Couldn't have asked for better definition tbh

De-frizz: Not perfect, but I've had worse

Re-fresh: I spritzed my hair with water the next day and put more in. It was definitely more frizzy, but not unbearable

Would I use again? Maybe. The effort of making the gel was maybe a little too much for me - I'm a lazy bitch

I'd love to know if you can think of a better way to squeeze out that lovely gel!

Happy squeezing,

Leah x
